Program Support Grants Powers Horizon High School to Success
Thanks to a Program Support Grant from the USTA Florida Foundation, Horizon High School in Winter Garden has taken major strides in growing its tennis program and expanding its impact in the community. From hosting youth camps to building a competitive team culture, Horizon is proving that tennis can be a powerful tool for connection and development.
The grant helped the program address key challenges, including equipment needs and facility enhancements. The addition of ball machines and windscreens allowed more players to train simultaneously and improved the overall experience for the growing team. Organizers also learned valuable lessons about camp planning and promotion, which will help streamline future events.
One of the program’s standout successes was a tennis camp for elementary students, organized and led by Horizon’s own players. Eight young participants learned the basics of the sport while building relationships with older student-athletes. The camp not only introduced tennis to a new generation but also gave Horizon’s players a chance to develop leadership skills. Team Captain Giovana shared, “I think the minicamp we hosted at Horizon had a great impact both on our community and our team,” she said. “We were able to teach and encourage the sport we love. I think in a way it also helped us learn more about leadership.”
On the competitive side, Horizon’s Girls Tennis Team had a remarkable season, going undefeated in their Metro District and winning the Metro West Championship. The program also saw strong engagement during the off-season, with over 30 students participating in open courts during the winter months and more than 60 students attending tryouts for the team.
Beyond the court, Horizon’s tennis program is building a legacy. The team’s visibility and success are creating a positive reputation in the school and surrounding community. Interest from younger students and inquiries about private lessons show that the program is sparking long-term interest in the sport.
With strong leadership, growing participation, and continued support from the USTA Florida Foundation, Horizon High School is laying the groundwork for a thriving tennis culture that will benefit students for years to come.
