USTA Florida Foundation Hurricane Relief Commits $466,000 to Rebuild Tennis

After disaster struck the state of Florida during the 2022 hurricane season, the USTA Florida Foundation emerged as a helping hand to the community. Launched in late 2022 and carried out through 2023, the Foundation created the Hurricane Relief Fund.

Thanks to the help of the community, the foundation was able to raise money to help rebuild tennis and restore hope. The Foundation provided crucial support to tennis facilities affected by hurricanes through the Hurricane Relief initiative.

Five grants, totaling an impressive $466,000, were committed to tennis facilities that faced significant damage in the wake of the hurricanes. These funds were committed to Beachview Tennis Club, Lee County Community Tennis Association, New Smyrna Beach Tennis Center, Racquet Club of Cocoa Beach, and Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis Facility.

Beachview Tennis Club, residing in Sanibel, suffered catastrophic damage. Owner of the club, Toni Halski, said there was more than 13-foot storm surge from Hurricane Ian and if left the facility destroyed. However, the grant from the Foundation was able to help in the rebuilding of 5 clay courts, a fully stocked pro shop, and elevated seating areas for excellent views of all the courts. “I am forever grateful for the USTA Florida Foundation,” Halski said.

The New Smyrna Beach Tennis Center was left with tons of flood damage, leaving the surface of their courts unplayable. However, they have already installed new lights, illuminating the courts for night play. “This grant has been such a relief for us and a massive improvement for the facility following the hurricane season, we can’t thank the USTA Florida Foundation enough,” Milena Volkova said, of the tennis center.

Finally, the Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis Facility and the Lee County Community Tennis Association saw damage to their nets, fences, lighting, windscreens, and more. The funds they are receiving will be vital in restoring tennis in these areas and seeing the sport thrive once again.

As 2023 ends, the USTA Florida Foundation brings the Hurricane Relief Grant program to a close. However, the Foundation remains ready to step in and help rebuild and restore tennis when needed. For more information about the Foundation’s mission as 2024 approaches, visit ustafloridafoundation.com
